Maramataka is a traditional Maori lunar calendar it tells us when its a
good time to harvest natural resources. it is mostly about the moon
and its phases. Ngataki senior students are making Maramataka mind
maps,charts about moon phases.
I wonder how they make the lunar calendar and its phases? Did they wait and look at the significant stars and mark when the sun came up and went down?
We also learnt about the Gregorian sun calendar. Maramataka does not follow the Gregorian sun calendar the are different. Gregorian calendar is based on the sun the Maramataka is based on the moon and the stars.
What do you think of Maramataka?
